The standard we build to
We build this website and the guide app to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, level AA. Our own house rule is stricter than the guideline in one respect: text contrast is held to at least 5.0:1 against its background on every surface, with no exemption for large type, and no type is set smaller than 11.5 pixels.
This website
- Every page has a logical heading structure, a descriptive title, and text alternatives for images.
- All controls work with a keyboard, and the focused control is visibly marked.
- The opening film on the home page is skipped automatically when your system asks for reduced motion, and can be skipped with a button or the Escape key at any time. It carries no essential information.
- Text can be resized to 200% without loss of content.
- Colour is never the only carrier of meaning.
The guide app
- Every article and listing is available to screen readers in reading order; images carry alternative text written as part of the editorial, not added afterwards.
- Page-turn animations, section transitions and ambient video are skipped or held still when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Videos that autoplay are muted; videos with sound play only when you choose to play them.
- Text size in the reader is fixed so that every page is set as the editor set it; the app supports your device’s system zoom, and the web edition offers preset text sizes.
- Every control can be reached by keyboard in the web edition and by assistive touch on mobile devices.
Known limitations
- The guide is designed as a two-page spread on a tablet held sideways. On a phone held upright it shows one page at a time; a reflowing single-column mode is planned and not yet available.
- Maps in the guide are provided by a third-party mapping service and are not fully accessible to screen readers; every listing’s address is also given as text.
- Videos from third-party channels carry only the captions their publishers provided.
- We test our screens against the contrast rule above; where a screen has not yet been measured we say so here rather than claim it. As of this review the guide app’s reader screens are in that measurement, and this statement will be updated when it is complete.

If something in the app or on this site is hard or impossible for you to use, write to support@goingglobalguides.com with the subject Accessibility, tell us what you were trying to do and what happened, and which assistive technology you use if any. We acknowledge within two working days and we treat a barrier as a defect to be fixed, not a request to be weighed.
