Thảo Điền, for relocating families.

Who Thao Dien suits, what to think twice about, and the crux of the decision, in the words of the Going Global Ho Chi Minh City guide.

01

Thao Dien, at a glance.

From the Going Global Ho Chi Minh City guide, First Edition.

Suits
Thảo Điền suits families who put schools and community first: it holds the city’s deepest concentration of international schools across every curriculum and fee level, the largest and most established expat community in Saigon, and the broadest restaurant, bar, fitness, and retail scene in the city — most of it walkable, with Metro Line 1 now reaching District 1 in about twenty minutes.
Think twice
Think twice if budget is tight or flooding is a dealbreaker: the expat premium is real, the October–November tidal surge floods named riverside streets ankle-to-knee, construction noise and school-run traffic are constant, and there is no top-tier hospital in the zone — serious acute care means crossing the river.
The crux
The decision crux: whether two decades of accumulated community depth and unrivalled schooling are worth the premium and the flooding season.

The thing that surprises most people arriving in Thảo Điền for the first time is how quickly the city recedes.
